Alexandr Foy

844

My name is Alexandr Foy, I am 36 years old, I live in Töölö, and I am a candidate for the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) in the municipal elections for the Helsinki City Council. Over the past 10 years, I have worked across sectors including education, culture, and social work.

From 2020 to 2022, I was a member of the Social and Health Care Committee as well as the Education and Culture Committee in the city of Porvoo, where I temporarily resided. This experience provided me with a practical understanding of municipal administration and the ability to work on issues that directly affect residents' lives. I am convinced that every person, regardless of age, social status, or background, should have equal opportunities for a dignified life in Helsinki and access to high-quality services.

In the third sector, I serve as the chairman of Globe Art Point ry, a producer at Tochka.fi rf, and an alternate board member of the cultural magazine Ny Tid. I am also one of the founders of the organization Svenska.fi, where I led many projects related to the integration of immigrants into the Swedish language.
For my work for the common good I have been awarded the following honors:

  • Hagfors Medal (2024)

  • Folktinget's Merit Medal (2021)

  • Bojan-Sonntag Award (2016)
I have a 13-year-old son and an 8-year-old stepson. I speak Swedish, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, English, and Finnish. My hobbies include organizing concerts, experiencing art, learning foreign languages, and playing football.

Why vote for me and the SDP?

Every child should receive high-quality basic education, learning support, and appropriate learning materials in early childhood education. There must be sufficient resources for teaching and guidance, and enough safe and competent adults in daycare centers and schools. It is in these settings that the skills and relationships with the community are formed—relationships that individuals carry with them for the rest of their lives.

For economic reasons, we have begun constructing large schools, but larger schools also bring greater challenges.
The SDP has pledged to limit class sizes to a maximum of 20 children. The city must take stronger measures against bullying, increase the number of school psychologists, and expand instruction in Finnish or Swedish as
a second language (F2/S2).
  • Pre-primary education to be extended to last two years

  • Aim of no more than 20 kids per group in primary school

  • Disruptive use of phones during lessons must be limited

  • Teaching of Finnish or Swedish as a second language (S2) must be reformed
and increased

  • Operating models to combat bullying to be introduced in every school
and educational institution

Education

Culture is not just about art or entertainment—it is what shapes our identity and gives us a sense of home. Culture helps us re-evaluate what is happening, cope with difficult times, and view the world from a new perspective. Cultural workers, artists, and cultural organizations are our guides in this process, and, in contrast to the government's budget cuts, the city should support the cultural sector.
The government’s cuts have put the existence of several cultural organizations, theaters, and artistic groups in jeopardy, while the financial stability of artists and cultural workers is currently under threat as many have lost their jobs. In Helsinki, it is essential to ensure that hobby and sports clubs, as well as other recreational providers, have the necessary conditions to operate effectively. Our goal is that every child and young person has the opportunity to engage in a free hobby connected to the school day.

Culture and Sports Are Not a Luxury

Culture and Sports Are Not a Luxury

Finns' trust in the health and medical care system, especially regarding access to care, has deteriorated. The Social and Health Care Committee must serve as
a counterbalance to the government's policy, under which it is considered acceptable to wait three months to see a doctor. The SDP insists that non-urgent primary care should be accessible within two weeks. Therefore, the focus of social and healthcare services must shift to preventive and basic services. By ensuring swift access to care, we prevent conditions from worsening and reduce the need for more expensive treatments. The identification of mental health issues in other parts of the healthcare system must be improved across all areas of welfare
in accordance with the "First Line Therapies" model.
  • Patients must be able to access non-urgent care within two weeks
throughout Finland

  • Mobile services, remote appointments and digital services available 24/7 must be introduced in every wellbeing services county

  • The personal doctor and personal nurse model must be adopted in primary healthcare

Access to Healthcare

The city of Helsinki must create better conditions for employment, streamline integration services for immigrants, support small businesses, and help those whose careers are taking a new turn. The new municipal employment services should meet the needs of individuals and workers, anticipate changes in the labor market, and match people with workplaces more quickly. In Helsinki, a strong foundation for entrepreneurship must be built through intensive collaboration with businesses, educational institutions, and policymakers. Investments in industrial and employment policies are necessary to strengthen growth, broaden the income base, and secure services.
